Why We Sleep

“In his groundbreaking exploration of the nocturnal realm, ‘Why We Sleep,’ Matthew Walker takes readers on a journey into the fascinating world of slumber.”

Walker dissects the science behind sleep into many different parts, and simplifies it, which makes it really easy for readers to understand. He explains the various stages of sleep, explaining how each stage can have an impact on memory accumulation, emotional regulation, or cognitive functioning.

The main idea behind “Why We Sleep” was an emphasis on how extreme the consequences of sleep deprivation can be. A person who hasn’t slept for 19 hours is as cognitively impaired as a person who is legally drunk. Similar examples show how sleep deprivation can also affect other things in our daily lives. From compromised immune systems to a higher risk of chronic diseases, I thought it was very eye opening and alarming.

What I liked about this book was how easy it was to read and how simple it was to apply the concepts. Not only does the author simplify the science behind it, he also offers realistic ideas for getting enough sleep each night. From optimizing the environment you sleep in, to establishing a consistent routine, the book has numerous tips. Based on scientific research, these suggestions provide readers with ways to improve their sleep, leading to an improvement of their daily lives.

In conclusion, I think “Why We Sleep” is a great read.
